HELICOID

Artist: Mauro Fuke | Year: 2005 | Dimensions: 30m x 9m x 2.5

The work was created by artist Mauro Fuke for the 5th MERCOSUR Biennial, held in 2005, which had as its premise the permanence of some works for use by the population. The final result of the work was obtained by the artist after digital simulations, where the topography, vegetation and visuals of the location were considered. The work is made up of 648 concrete blocks, which are covered by a red granite top, with each block varying in height, reaching a maximum of one meter in height. Seen from above (upper level of the slope), the whole resembles a helicoid. This possibility of a superior view is perceived mainly by those who pass along the track over the dike.

attentive eyes

Artist: José Resende | Year: 2005 | Dimensions: 30m x 9m x 2.5m

Artist José Resende's initial project for the 5th MERCOSUR Biennial consisted of a steel structure advancing into Lake Guaiba, rising towards the sun. Proposal not accepted due to the risk of it becoming a diving board. Thus, the work was installed at the top of the dike, also towards Guaíba, facing west. Due to its large dimensions, it functions as a viewpoint for contemplating the panoramic view along the Guaiba riverfront. Its structure is made up of two cantilevered industrial steel bars (profile “I”), 30 meters long, weighing 22 tons.

The work was created by artist Carmela Gross for the 5th MERCOSUR Biennial, an exhibition held in 2005, which had as its premise the permanence of some works for use by the population. The artist called her work Waterfall due to the movement that rainwater makes as it descends the steps formed by the concrete plates. The work transposes planes: “a passage between the upper level of the embankment (Avenida Beira Rio) and the lower plane at the water level”. It consists of 16 juxtaposed concrete plates with irregular parallelogram shapes. Steel sheets were placed on the edges of each plate to highlight the profile of the pieces.
